Restoring Hand Functions: From Soft Rehabilitation Gloves To Prosthetic Hands

Abstract
The restoration of hand functions following injuries or amputations has been a long-standing challenge in the field of rehabilitation and prosthetics. In this presentation, I will discuss two recent works on recovering hand functions. The first is a soft-packaged and portable rehabilitation glove capable of closed-loop fine motor skills. We develop a soft rehabilitation glove that can accomplish diverse FMSs by integrating 15 bending sensors and 10 shape-memory-alloy (SMA) actuators. The second is a lightweight prosthetic hand with 19-DOF dexterity and human-level functions. We develop a lightweight prosthetic hand that possesses 19-DOF dexterity by integrating 38 SMA actuators to precisely control five fingers and the wrist.
